Opening September 2025
At Raise Rochdale, we offer a personalised and ambitious curriculum designed to help every learner re-engage with education, aspire to achieve, and succeed in their next steps. Many of our learners join us following permanent exclusion, often with gaps in learning and low academic confidence. Our curriculum is structured to rebuild trust in education, develop key skills, and prepare young people for successful futures.

Understanding and Meeting Learners Needs
We are dedicated to understanding each learner as a unique individual. Before pathway allocation, we carefully identify their strengths and any barriers to learning they may face. Initial assessments take place in our Intro Centre and include a range of tools such as SNAPB, SNAPSpld, readiness for mainstream, CATS, NGRT, and NGST.
Our recent data highlights several common barriers to learning across our cohort. By recognising and responding to these needs, we ensure every learner receives the right support at the right time.
Key Barriers to Learning
Behavioral Barriers
Explosive Anger
Which means that they cannot problem-solve to deal constructively with frustrations and setbacks and maintain good relationships with friends and adults.
Low Academic Self Esteem
Refers to the extent to which pupils feel comfortable and secure in the school environment.
Instrumental Aggression
Responding to challenges with difficulty means that they can’t manage frustrations and use problem-solving skills, instead of aggression, when faced with challenges.
Defiance Towards Adults
All young people have basic needs that motivate their behaviour, but those who have a strong-willed temperament, are unclear about relationship boundaries or generally obtain outcomes they like because of their behaviour, can learn to expect their wishes and demands to be met.
Over Dependence on Adults
Cannot work independently or without adult support. Can be put off when efforts are unsuccessful.
Specific Learning Difficulty Barriers
Attention Deficit
Attention difficulties arise from an inability to sustain and control attention, even over a short period of time.
Auditory Processing
Difficulty with his auditory processing – listening to instructions and getting the right information from them.
Sensory Integration and Sensitivity
These are disorders with the processing of information from some or all senses.
Cognitive and Learning Barriers
Attention Difficulties
Some learners struggle to focus, even for short periods, which can affect their ability to follow instructions and stay engaged in lessons.
Auditory Processing Difficulties
These learners may find it hard to process spoken instructions, which can affect their understanding and ability to complete tasks.
Sensory Sensitivities
Learners with sensory processing challenges may become overwhelmed or dysregulated by certain sounds, textures, lights, or environments.
By identifying these barriers early and working in close partnership with families and professionals, we provide targeted support that helps learners re-engage with education, build resilience, and develop the skills they need to succeed—both in school and beyond.
