British Values at RAISE Rochdale PRS
At RAISE Rochdale PRS, British Values refer to a set of values that the government believes are important for learners to understand and uphold. These are sometimes referred to as Fundamental British Values or Core British Values. They include democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
The promotion of British Values at RAISE Rochdale PRS is embedded throughout the curriculum and is delivered in the following ways:
Democracy
Democracy is fundamental to life at RAISE Rochdale PRS. Learners are always listened to by adults and are encouraged to listen carefully to one another, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Learners also have opportunities to share their views and ideas through our Student Council and student questionnaires.
Learners participate in Votes for Schools sessions each week. During these sessions, learners discuss key issues happening in the world today. From these discussions, learners form their own opinions and vote on the topics discussed. These sessions help learners to experience the democratic process and understand its importance within wider society.
The Rule of Law
The importance of laws—whether those that govern the classroom, the school, or the country—is regularly reinforced at RAISE Rochdale PRS through our behaviour policy. Classroom rules are clear and fair, with the aim of maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment.
Learners are taught the value and purpose of rules and laws, how they govern and protect us, the responsibilities they involve, and the consequences when they are broken. This value is taught through PSHE lessons as part of our Personal Development Curriculum.
Individual Liberty
At RAISE Rochdale PRS, learners are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate learners and provide clear boundaries to help them make informed choices about their lives.
We support learners to develop self-esteem and empower them to make their voices heard. This is taught through our Personal Development Curriculum, particularly within the Turnaround and My Futures elements.
Mutual Respect
Respect is integral to life at RAISE Rochdale PRS. We teach learners that respect for themselves and others is essential for leading a positive and productive life. We believe it is imperative that respect is shown to everyone and encourage learners to embrace and celebrate differences between people.
This value is taught across all three elements of our Personal Development Curriculum—PSHE, Turnaround, and My Futures. Learners also develop an understanding of mutual respect through our programme of Enrichment Activities.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
At RAISE Rochdale PRS, we promote tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs through PSHE lessons and as part of our Enrichment Activities programme. Learners are encouraged to develop an understanding of diversity and to show respect and openness towards the beliefs and values of others.
